Today was not eventful except for the long, long, drive and ending up 2 hours along the back roads of the Gila National Forest in the dark. I wish I had one of these, above on my trip. Google Maps did get me to my destination, the Gwynn Tank Campground. However, because the large, easy road was broken, I was directed to drive 5 or 6 Forest Roads that were repaired from damages caused by recent fires. Several of the crevice crossings were made of slightly packed dirt mounds that looked like my van would collapse them. Also, ruts and rocks were everywhere on the back roads. Traveling at 8 to 12 mph, in the dark, for 40 miles can cause a little panic. But I had no idea what I was in for the next day.
One of my graduate advisors did his dissertation on a cohort of Pronghorn Antelope. I had to take a photo of these animals on my way into darkness. Regardless, I made it into the campground just fine. Halfway along my journey I thought I should write down the roads that Google Maps was taking me on so I could get back the same way. Ahh, no need. I’ll remember.
Fishing for Gila Trout tomorrow.
