If I had taken a picture of the first fish I caught on this trip, a Redband Trout from the Nevada portion of the Jarbidge River, I would have saved a day and a lot of driving. So, I had to drive 2 hours to Jackpot, then two and a half hours to Jarbidge to try to catch a fish I caught two weeks ago. Fortunately I found the pool I fished successfully before.
The first rise by a fish to my mini-hopper resulted in the landed fish in the photo above. Not much happened after this fish was released. I had one more rise by a small fish on the hopper. I tried several other flies: Royal Humpy, Elk Hair Caddis, and an orange Stimulator. The King/Queen of the pond attacked the Elk Hair Caddis, but alas, no hookup.
After about 30 minutes thrashing the pool, I drove the 2.5 hours back to Jackpot. I put $10 into a video poker machine, again for my ex father in law, and contemplated how I haven’t hit 4 of a kind on this trip yet. A couple more pulls and I was dealt AAAAK in that order. I should have taken a picture. I cashed out $40 and joined a blackjack table. Luck was on my side as my basic strategy and guesses at increasing my bets resulted into a $160 profit. That pays off the tire alignment with a little left over to buy baby toys.
Tomorrow I’m off to Onemile Creek in Utah to attempt to catch a Yellowstone Cutthroat for the Utah Slam. This creek is noted for spooky fish in a very, very tiny creek. Crawling on one’s belly and dapping the fly blindly into the creek over vegetation has been documented many times on the Internet. Such fun. I cannot wait. Hopefully my chair and I can blend into the background and not scare the fish. Hopefully!
Tight Lines!
