I got the wheels of my van rotated and had the alignment readjusted to specs. Something about 1000 miles on pot-holed dirt roads causing problems, and losing $1000+ on my last two sets of tires because of poor alignment, made this matter one of utmost importance. My plan was to drive to Elko and then up to Jarbidge to hopefully catch a beautiful Redband Trout and the mystical Bull Trout.
It turns out Wendover used to be the best town for blackjack card counters, or advantage players, in the states prior to Covid. As a “strong” basic strategy player I hoped to find a table with a counter on it so I could modify my bets along with him/her. And then, at the Peppermill it turns out that they have free drinks and a poker room.
Well, two beers and a profit of $17 at the blackjack table made me check out the poker room, and buy into the table with 65 big blinds. I’m an average player, not strong enough to win pots by agressive bluffing from the start. And I’ve lost my last eight sessions since June, where I usually break even or down one or two sessions…..a losing player but not too bad (a strong rationalization).
I hung in and hung in, three times getting down to 20 big blinds, then winning an all-in and getting back to my original 65. Hours flew by and I found that free rooms were given to players during the weekdays if they played for 6 hours. I was in my 7th hour, got a free room, ended up playing another two hours, until 3 AM, and by sheer luck ended up with a profit of 80 big blinds. Waiting for a big hand (a fish hookup) and eventually winning the pot (landed the fish) actually worked for me today.
Tomorrow I head out to catch a Lahontan Cutthroat Trout in Nevada to get Nevada into one of the eventual 12 states to qualify for the Master Angler status in the Western Native Trout Challenge.
Tight Lines!
