Just A Note to My Follower(s). There was No Cell Signal between Elko and Jarbidge. Posts and comments were delayed (until today’s posting on day 6). I’m sure this will happen throughout this trip.
It rained hard throughout the night. I contemplated staying in Jackpot at the Casino 93 because it was so cheap ($60/night) and the $5 single deck blackjack only had a 0.30% house edge (Wizard of Odds). However, I knew that my odds of winning were much less than my odds of dipping deeper into my bankroll, so I drove 2 hours, all along paved roads, to Jarbidge.
I stopped along the East Fork of the Jarbidge River and fished for about ten minutes. Nothing but beautiful scenery and water. I then drove to Jarbidge to find that the main stream of the Jarbidge River was muddy and unfishable. Aarrgghh. Perhaps the headwaters were clear, so after another trip to the headwaters, muddy brown was the word for the day.
However, I stopped at The Outpost for lunch and had the best bacon cheeseburger with onion rings that I can remember. The diner was full and the bar was jamming. Turned out the the bar was just one group of people having a lunch break. Young kids were playing pool and I thought about hustling them for their allowances but the parents seemed a little too big for me to hustle their children. But, not only the food was great but the server Jace, who was working his butt off as was everyone in the diner/ saloon, told me that the mythical Bull Trout, locally known as the …Centaur….Unicorn… Bigfoot Bullshit trout was actually was swimming in the river (I didn’t catch his full, great, expression).
Back to Idaho (10 miles), I pulled into the forks campground where the clear East Fork emptied into the muddy main fork. The rain started coming down hard again and I got comfortable reading a book in the van. And then, at 5:00 PM, I decided to take a nap. At 9:30 PM I realized that my body needed the four hour nap and now all things would become better.
Tomorrow my plan is to fish the East Fork of the Jarbidge River until I catch a Redband Trout. Then back to the town of Jarbidge to possibly fish for real this time for a Bull Trout. And maybe, over the hill towards Elko to fish the Mary’s River for a Lahontan Trout. Things are picking up and the rain is cooling off.
Tight Lines!
