I’m headed north again, looking for lakes and creeks I can fish for fun and bragging rights. A week long rain is due as seen in the clouds above. I set my float tube and gear ready to go out, when I had a “great” idea. The shore is flat out to a drop off. Small, round stones are near the edge, then medium as you go out farther, up to softball sized just before the drop off. A lot of work was done to make the campsite shoreline smooth under water.
Since I caught most of my fish here on the drop off, my idea was to wade out to the drop off, fish the edges, and move up and down the shore to get lots of fishing access without being in a wind blown belly boat. Now, I’m sure nobody has waded out on this shore shelf, with super rounded rocks, covered with algae Even with spikes in the soles of my boots, once I made it out to the drop off, I could not move my feet without losing my balance. My trusty wading staff was at my……storage area in the van. I did fish with a very limited of available water as my back cast would hit the trees behind. After about 20 minutes, I carefully waded back to shore.
And then, the wind came up putting white capped waves moving across the lake. Not a good sight before getting into a belly boat. But wait! I bought some beer and fire wood so I could have my first camp fire after 78 days on the road.
This was a good choice, although my day camp mentor who taught me how to light a camp fire using only one match would be disgusted. I chopped the pieces of wood as small as I could go, but not small enough. Four of the seven logs in the bundle were chopped into very small to medium sized pieces. However, the last three logs were inundated with knots and the logs could not be broken down.
I got the fire going, with help of paper towels (OMG), and the fire got roaring, sort of. The fire was ready for 1/2 sized logs and not full sized logs. I didn’t have any 1/2 sized logs so the fire petered out before it could become a roaring, warming fire combating the cold winds that were blowing.
So, I fished, sort of, but am excited about tomorrow. On to the lake!
