Hank, my guide to catching grayling, suggested that I take a road trip. He suggested going down the Parks Highway to the Denali Highway, across the Denali Highway, down to Valdez, Up to Glen Allen, and then over to Anchorage (PHEW). I had planned on taking the Denali Highway as it is said to have the most beautiful scenery in Alaska. The eastern first 26 miles of the road are said to be the best. I ran the mileage numbers, and crossing west on the Denali Highway would put me in a spot to get to Valdez, and if not, the mileage was the same crossing in either direction.
I drove 257 miles down to the Denali Highway and across it to the start of the “beautiful section”. I decided to brave everything I live for to pull out on a highway pullout and sleep in the van. There were at least 20 campers and cars setting up campsites in road pullouts as I crossed the Denali Highway. It was the safest option compared to continuing tired, looking for a campground. I survived the night and started a real road trip the next day.
