I slept in today. Nothing new. Pictured above is a desk that I spent two hours at, charging my lap top, editing, photos, and catching up on my blog. I also printed out required forms for my float trip tomorrow. The reference librarian told me the three ways to get documents printed from my laptop, as fast as 2 seconds and as long as 30 minutes. I accidently chose the 30 minute method, thinking it was the fastest way. Oops again.
I headed out the Chena Hotsprings Road and went to the campground I used last night. I see people boondocking for free, at some of the pullouts and day use sites. I don’t have the courage yet. When I return and realize that 20 bucks a night to park in a campground adds up over 3 months. I don’t mind the federal campsites at 9 dollars a night, because the access to bathrooms and the security of a camp host feels just about the correct cost for me.
By the time I got to the campground, it was about 7:30 PM. I don’t want to put on waders and try for one or two graylings at such a late time, especially since I had a full day float trip tomorrow. But, Mile 48 pond was calling out to me, and I went. In tonight’s 1:15 session, I landed 14. Half of them were grayling. If I cast out to my left at 45 degrees, I caught rainbows. If I cast straight out into the pond, I landed graylings.
The interesting differences between the two species, was that rainbows ignored the fly as I allowed it to sink, before stripping it in. The graylings mostly would take the fly on the soak, and follow it in to strike if they missed. Just a little thing I noticed. I found out that there are some humongous rainbows in the pond, so next time I show up here I’ll have to belly boat it and try to find the “bigguns” at the bottom and middle of the lake. Tomorrow………Grayling Float Trip.
