The Delta Clearwater River is the top river for large Arctic Grayling. It is 95 miles from Fairbanks and the only place that one can bank fish is at the state campground. No roads get near the river anywhere else. The river is superb for floating, but not so much for wading. Regardless, since there is little access on the Chena and Chatanika rivers, I drove down to check it out.
Arriving in the early evening, I drove through the campground and was able to observe two fishermen across the river. They were in a place I wouldn’t cross by myself, so that was out. The river was beautiful, clear, but I didn’t see a lot of access from within the park and just outside it. I spent the night there to reassess in the morning.
Nothing much more today, but perhaps a good chance at catching a large Grayling tomorrow.
