As stated in my previous post, I was alone in the road pull off when I got up at 10:30 AM. Rain was drizzling and the sky was overcast and threatening northward along the road. The wind was very strong and cold, and the Denali Highway for fishing Grayling was south of my position. I decided to push forward and get into Fairbanks two hours away.
I made it into Fairbanks easily, got lunch, headed to the library to post yesterday’s blog, and I am excited about the choice I made to head north. Anchorage south to Homer is having rain, off and on, for the next week. The rivers may not clear at all and I would be hanging around in the rain. I’m now in 70 degree temperatures, clear skies, and fish of several species are in range.
So far I have landed a Red Salmon (float trip), Pink Salmon (DIY fishing), Rainbows and a large Dolly Varden (DIY fishing). I would like to go back to Homer on my way home and fill my freezer from a Halibut and Silver Salmon charter. Until then, my eyes are open for Silver Salmon, and Wide Open for Grayling.
My list of species I want to catch on my trip here in Alaska:
Caught: Red Salmon, Pink Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden Char
Not Caught: Grayling, Pike, Sheefish, Silver Salmon, Halibut
Grayling and Silver Salmon are mostly probable. Halibut are available by charter. Pike, if I get them, will probably be by charter. Sheefish, who hang out at the Arctic Circle, may be too much of a challenge for this trip.
I’m headed out today to find Grayling, while researching Sheefish. There are no Pike charters until September, so those might be possible. Silver Salmon while wading in a river is probably blown out at the Anchor River, so more research is needed. However, I’m in the middle of all these species and that is why I came up here. Fun is at hand.
Tight Lines!
