I got into Homer and drove all the way to the end of the spit. Lots of tourist shops and fishing trip shops with a lot of cars for a Tuesday. I looked online for fly shops and found one just above the Anchor River. I made a reservation for a half day guided walking tour, to learn how people fish this drainage.
I then found the Anchor River Fly Shop, with Brian and John tying flies as the water was browning. Brian was the spokesman, and wow, he told me exactly what was going on. Coho have been coming up on every high tide, with a small amount of Steelhead. The plan is to go down to the tidal influenced runs two hours before high tide and wait for the fish to move upstream, back down, then up, while they convert their gills from salt water to fresh water. The go-to color for flies is fluorescent green, with black and purple always in your box.
I decided not to fish as the river was muddy brown. Brian stated that the river clears up in a day or two. I found a campsite and hung out for the evening. Not much to do and it is raining, hard. AARRGGHH!
Tight Lines!
