A nice Saturday to wake up, read, nap, brunch, and then fish. Just like every perfect day. I got out on the water at 5 PM, and the wind blew me to the north, instead of south, for the first time. Instead of having to work so hard to get back at the end of a session, I decided to start off trolling into the wind, planning to let the wind bring me back to my campsite at the end. However, the wind was strong this time. I got a strike while trolling, and then the fish came back to hook up. Large pieces of food swimming around are scarce for a trout, so they usually hook themselves quickly. I had the fish on for a couple of head shakes, then off, having never seen the fish.
The wind blew too hard for trolling, so I drifted with the wind and cast into the shore, retrieving the Sheep Creek Special, on an Intermediate line back for a recast. And, and, a fish smashed the fly, never came out of the water, and bull dogged down the entire time It as a nice 14? incher, stout, and I used my new net to land it.
I like the new net as it is deep, allowing for the fish to be a foot or more under the water while the floating net frame is on the surface. The net is big enough for smaller Steelhead on the Trinity River, so now I have no excuse to not fish there. I’m looking into waterproof, rubber attaching paint so I can place markers in the net to make my own Measure Net.
All is well again.
