I somehow missed a day of posting?????? Being ADHD or at least borrowing from ADHD, I made a spreadsheet consisting of the numbered day of this trip, the day of the week, and the date. So, I don’t know where things got messed up, but today, Monday August 1, is the 41st day of this trip.
Today’s quest has been to check the roadside pull out access to the Kenai River. When the Silver Salmon come up I need to know areas where I can cast out to the fish, and not just flip a line 10 feet in front of me. Most of the access points were very steep, but still manageable.
It has been raining all day, but not hard. I heard that 8000 salmon moved up the Russian River on Saturday. I decided to check out the Russian River and headed out this afternoon. I went to the middle parking lot to see if the fish from Saturday had moved up. There were several fishermen, several filleted carcasses in the water (Not supposed to be there because is brings bears to the fishermen), and no signs of fish.
I did chat with a woman whose husband joined his friend out in the middle of the stream. She stayed back as her feet were cold, and nobody was catching fish. The three of them had been down my the confluence this morning, and they did really well as pods of fish would start up the river, then head back down, several times until they burst up the river.
Saturday’s fish were probably already up at the falls, the end of their trip. I did not put my gear on as not much was happening, so I just watched, enjoyed the beauty of the area, and am waiting for the river to be full of fish and fishermen as shown in YouTube videos.
When I was in Soldotna, I purchased a hotel for Tuesday night. However, the web site continued to show hotels out of the area, and I paid for a night at a hotel 20 miles above Anchorage. And, there is no possibility of cancelation. The good news is I can get an oil change and tire rotation for the van, and purchase a folding chair to replace the one stolen on Saturday. The chair was very useful when organizing the contents of the van, and especially when putting on and taking off my waders and boots.
So, no fishing today, and none tomorrow. Then, this trip will enter a new phase. Stay Tuned.
Tight Lines!
