Today was a good day. I uploaded 4 days of blog posts at the Soldotna Library. It took me a half hour with google maps as a parade was nearby. I got done about 3:00 and headed back out to Centennial Park. I put my gear on, pulled out my folding chair, and waited until a spot opened up.
I sat for an hour and fifteen minutes when I was next in line and entered the water. After about 10 minutes, I felt a snag, held the rod up and the line was pulsing. That can be the river flow causing the pulsing, or a salmon. It turned out it was a salmon. One guy asked if I wanted him to net it, and I said no, as I wanted to release it. I got it to the beach and it popped off. NO PICTURE.
I fished that first session for an hour, and hooked a second fish, in the mouth, and I called for a net. Right at the shore, a guy put the net under the fish, the fly popped out of the mouth of the fish, the guy lifted the net up………….and nothing. A second fish with NO PICTURE.
Now I know 4 people who will believe me, my kids, my ex, and my friend Mike. For the rest of you waiting for fish porn, it is on the way. My first session lasted 45 minutes and my second I made it for an hour, but no more fish for me today.
The man on the left is probably in his late 80’s. He and his brother have been coming up here for 23 years. They talked to me about their great stories of the past, and helped me set up my rig, telling me what to buy for the next day. Note that both of the fishermen in the picture were playing a fish. I guess I’ll just become a Mad River Steelhead fisherman converted to a Kenai River Red Salmon fisherman.
