Last night I pin pointed all the blue lines crossing the Alcan Highway on a map. There were at least 150 between Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson I filled up the gas tank and headed out from Alcan Highway Marker #0, for 280 miles!. Evidently the blue lines on the map were mostly rivulets when it rains hard, with pipes under the highway connecting both sides.
I drove 145 miles before I saw water flowing under the highway. The first super creek / river was at mile 160, and there were only 4 more creeks until I stopped at mile 285 for the night. Each of the creeks were mentioned in The Milepost (mile by mile information along the entire Alcan Highway). I didn’t stop as I was half a tank of gas used, and my idea of just pulling off the road to camp is not realistic. The Alcan is a straight shot I-5 type highway, with fields and trees lining the sides the whole way. There are roads, about two vehicles wide, that enter into the deep unknowns in the woods. If one were to camp on the side of one of these roads, hell would be to pay if a lumber truck came along the road.
I thought about hitting these creeks tomorrow, by backtracking. But, I found an Internet article about fishing near Fort Jones, where I am staying tonight. There are several places nearby that offer, according to the Milepost, better fishing.
However, on the bright side the areqs up here are gorgeous. They remind me of Montana / Big Sky country. So, tomorrow I head out to fish. Phew.
