When a master fly tyer and fisherman like Tim Paxton tells you to be sure to fish the Lake Highway 24 in BC because there are over a hundred lakes all full of fish. I drove an hour to the town of Little Fort which is the eastern edge of the 97 km long highway 24. I checked in with the Little Fort fly shop and the owner gave me the names of three smaller lakes suitable for a float tube. I also had names of another 4 good lakes from an Internet article. I never like getting advice without buying something, so I left the shop after purchasing the two flies above, hand picked by the proprietor.
I got to Crystal Lake about 3:00. I figured I’d put in a 3-hour shift and then clean up to go to another lake tomorrow. I timed myself and it takes me 5:30 minutes to inflate the belly boat. And, only 3 minutes to deflate and pack it into the trunk of the car.
There were no signs of working fish, so I trolled for 45 minutes around the shore and about 100 yards from the shore. There was a rolling thunder lasting 10 to 15 seconds in the distance, and dark clouds moving my way. I didn’t want to be the tallest item in the middle of a lake so I got out.
Fifteen minutes after I got out of the water a heavy rainfall started and it lasted all evening and through the night. I nestled in the van, and using an offline map on my Kindle Fire, I pin pointed 1208 places where the Alcan Highway crosses a creek or river. I don’t think I’ll be able to fish them all.
So, tomorrow I’ll try another lake from the list. Time to get to bed.
