I left Lewiston at 9 AM and got to Sims Flat Campground at 10:30. I was able to get a good campsite for two nights. However, I learned the fun times of finding a couple of needed shoe boxes of stuff to end up with them piled up all over the bed, pushing me off. After paying for my spot, I drove into Dunsmuir to the famous Ted Fay fly shop. I picked up two recommended flies and a pair of pliers to smash the barbs on flies. I didn’t know where my normal pliers were, and of course I found them two hours later.
After getting up at the early hour of 830 AM, I took my first nap of the trip in the van, for two hours, with the Fantastic Fan in my face on Medium. Setting up my fishing gear, walking several times to check the river, and I was too exhausted to put on my gear and enter the water.
After the nap I felt better and walked to the bridge to see if bugs were hatching and if anyone was fishing the water. I ran into a guy on the bridge checking out the water. He had been here 4 days and caught no fish bigger than 3 inches. And, he fished a lot of water, stretching more than ten miles along the river.
His reports from talking to fishermen along the river that now isn’t a great time for fishing the Upper Sac. Speculation from several fishermen is that the river is too warm. Nobody was catching fish. The last river report from The Fly Shop was two weeks earlier and stated that the fishing was Great (highest possible reading). They updated their report today, stating that the water temperature is topping 70, so they advise to fish higher up.
I don’t want to stick around another day when there is the McCloud river just an hour away. It looks like I’m leaving after one day here, for hopefully cooler weather and better fishing. On to Fowlers Campground on the McCloud river tomorrow.
Tight Lines!!!!
Hope I’m not to late to the party. 1st blog I have read and I will read the others and comment. Impressed that you are getting up earlier in spite of the back pain. Look forward to the other posts for kicks and grins.
