I got out on the lake yesterday and got blown all over the place by the wind. I tried to get into the spot that was hot for Don the day before. The wind blew me right into the hot spot, and I had to use my motor to free me from smashing into the bank. Needless to say the wind won the day.
However, there are a couple of wind free (or less) areas on the lake. I moved into a beautiful small cove and the fish were there…..the fish were there. I count how many fish I land because decades ago chasing half pounders and steelhead, we would tell each other our counts so we could decide whether a four to six hour round trip drive was worth it. Currently, the Marina people like to know: where; what; how many; how large; and how long was I fishing. Since they have increased my quality of life greatly, I still count the number of fish caught and let them know answers all of the questions above.
However, I stopped counting yesterday as my current fishing buddies just rate the day: great; good; not so good, etc. Well, for a couple of hours I had a good to great time in a little back cove. Fish ran 13 to 15 inches and fought well. I used to use 3/4 and 4 weight rods on the lake. However, these recent fish fight like small steelhead and the pressure on my wrist is quite great even with a stout five weight rod.
I got out for a little while today. Fish were rising and I drove right through a pod of fish only to watch them swim away and not return. I did manage to catch one fish trolling and one by casting over it’s rise form. Not bad for an hour. The lake was flat, clear, and not a ripple of wind to be found. It is amazing that the winds can change day to day, and that the conditions are beautiful and ideal. I’m ready for more.
