I got on the lake today at noon and the water was wonderfully ripply. The ripples give soaking midges a wonderful action. And the ripples don’t affect trolling or stripping flies. I met Don out on the lake and asked him how he had been doing, and I never fully heard due to the wind and my single hearing aid.
Don was working water above the island as I had stated that yesterday I caught my fish in that area. Not much was happening for Don at the moment so I decided to troll the loop I had used yesterday. I picked up one fish in the middle of the water, but then caught two fish near the bank just above the fish cages. I’ve observed recently planted fish tend to stay near the shore, and the lake was planted last week.
I called Don over and he immediately caught fish by suspending a balanced leech under an indicator. I tried the same rig and hooked one fish, losing it at the boat. I then spent a half hour to hook no fish while Don kept doing well. I then decided to troll some more.
I ended up landing 8 fish, one 13 inch, two 15 inch, and the rest 14 inches. All came from trolling and most of those were from close to the bank. The weather turned windier and colder so Don headed home and I headed back in.
It was a good teamwork day. We both searched for fish, I found them, and Don had a good day on the water, as did I.
