I got out on the lake to putter a little while before the early dark. In 30 minutes I had 3 hookups and landed two 13 inchers using a blackberry leech. Two locals from the park landed 5 and lost many more using their new strategy: when fish rise move the boat quickly to the area and throw spinners into the rings. Not a bad strategy actually.
However, I saw two things I’ve never seen before: 1) a healthy October Caddis hatch all over the water by the marina; and 2) six seagulls about 40 feet in the air snagging October Caddis as if they were swallows and not seagulls. The gulls would fly about, shift direction, stall in the air for a second, shoot out their beak to capture an insect, and then head off looking for another one.
So, I’m doing two recumbent exercise bike workouts today / tonight so I can go fishing tomorrow all day. I would love to tie several October Caddis balanced leech patterns. However, probably not tonight after a second workout lol. Regardless, the hatch is on the lake, the fish are active, and it is time to exploit the October Caddis to have great days on the lake.
