I know a lot of people are fishing the Trinity River as the Salmon and Steelhead are moving upstream. However, the fishing is hot and the weather is cooler at Lewiston Lake.
I got on the lake today at noon. I anchored again just downstream from the island across from Pine Cove Marina. The fish did not disappoint in the first hour. I landed 8 and lost two fish stripping them in. I also had about 10 more takes where I set up on the fish only to see a bright silver flash swimming away.
After the first hour things changed. A hatch started, very small, but the fish moved from the shallows into the deeper water. It appeared that they were cruising around looking for surface bugs. There was one fish, about 13 inches, fatter than most, and much darker. It came out of the water at least a dozen times, all over the area, over an hour. It was enjoyable to see the fish jumping with such enthusiasm. I had never seen a fish jumping so often and so much out of the water. I’m sure it was the same fish because it looked much differently than all of the other fish .
Fish number 9 is pictured above. It took a size 16 TT (turkey tail PT variation) and fought hard. It was nice having 4X tippet, rated at 7 pounds so I could horse the fish in. However, it was tired when netted. I spent 5 minutes allowing it to rest and tried moving the net forward and back to push water through it’s gills. I don’t think it worked, but the fish moved away with a head of steam. I caught a few more fish casting and stripping back a Sheep Creek Special. It was hit and miss as I couldn’t find a concentration of fish. After 2.5 hours and landing 15 fish I called it a day, and took a long nap.
I finished the day with a 20+ minute bike ride on my new bike. Wow, a recumbent is very different than an upright bike, but I like it. However, it appears that I need the lowest, easiest gear on slight inclines. What am I to do with real hills. Looks like an electric motor is in my future!
