Okay. I’ve been living in Lewiston California for 9 months. Lots of things have happened since my last post, but I have my health so all is well. I’ve started July 1 as the start of my fishing year, and I’ve been on Lewiston Lake fishing 8 of the last 10 days.
The net above is a medium Measure Net. I paid full price and have no relationship with the company. I like it. But more background is needed about the last 6 months.
December through March was tough fishing. The fish roamed in schools of 50 to 100+, showing their presence by one occasional fish sipping the surface. It was like fishing the Heisenburg Uncertainty Principle. I could tell where the fish were, but not where they were heading.
Mid-April through the middle of June the flows were really high because this year has been a “wet year”. Twice the flows were over 10,000 cfs compared to the summer flows of 350 cfs. I’ve been working on a new boat I purchased as my current boat is very unstable and tippy.
So, what is the news about the new fishing year? I’ve fished 5 evenings netting one fish each night. The fish ranged from very small to overwinter steelhead-like specimens. Today I fished from 3:00 to 5:00 near the flats at “10 Mile”. I hooked a planter trout trolling into the area, expecting it to be 10 inches long. Thanks to the new net I was able to keep the fish in the water, remove the hook, and measure that is was 13 inches long. I certainly have been underestimating the size of the fish I’ve been catching over the years.
I finally found the fish today. I landed another 13 fish anchored in the flats and casting / stripping black mohair blue/red sparkle leeches. Another fly fisherman was 100 – 150 yards away (I don’t like to move into other people’s fishing spot). He was matching and out catching me using midges and an indicator. The fish are back (never left), but I have finally found them after 6 months.
For the record, the largest fish I landed was 15 inches long. A very pretty fish as they all were.
I’m back. I have no followers so my kids will probably read this in the future. Maybe I’ll have something interesting to attract people to this blog as I enjoy fishing along with travel during my retirement.
